U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan gets a Pack of Justice Award for ruling polar bears should be on the Endangered Species List – due to the impact of melting sea ice.
The judge, as reported in an Huffington Post article, ruled the decision was “rational” and “based on science.” Great News – We need more judges who understand climate change and the need to protect wildlife species.
The state of Alaska and some hunting groups have fought against the added protections from the endangered species listing, suggesting the bears are protected under other laws. TRANSLATION – ‘these other laws are so weak, as to allow for killing of the bears.’
Why else would the state of Alaska and the hunting groups be against ESL protections? It’s the same warped reasoning the AKC and other organizations use against better puppy mill regulations. They claim the current laws – that allow for suffering in tiny cages, little or no vet care and slap-on-the-wrist punishments – are good enough.
