Born Free USA is reporting Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki recently set ablaze 335 elephant tusks. Lusaka Agreement Task Force and the Government of Kenya were making a point of protesting the illegal ivory trade is sending elephants closer to extinction.
Born Free notes a few decades ago, 1.3 million elephants roamed Africa. But about 600,000 were killed for their tusks in the 1970s and 80s. Even now, it is estimated that approximately 35,000 are being brutally killed each year – for nothing more than greed.
