Gas Chambers: The totally unnecessary evil

It really is long-past time to ban gas chambers as a means to euthanize animals. ALL of the excuses for using gas chambers have been wiped off the table.

I’m not sure how any shelter operator at this point can really claim they have to use the gas chamber. So many communities have banned the practice and have proven there are other means to deal even with dogs or cats or wildlife that are deemed dangerous.

AVMA modifies its stance on the use of gas chambers

The Animal Law Coalition is reporting the American Veterinary Medical Association has modified its stance on the use of gas chambers as a method of euthanasia.

To date the AVMA has called the use of carbon monoxide gas chambers “acceptable” as a method of euthanasia. Now, in a new 2011 proposal, the organization is stating the following – (from the Animal Law Coalition website) –

Legislative update – abuse, gas chambers and dog fighting

Beckham’s Act is one of a trio of bills introduced recently in the Alabama legislature – and no, it has nothing to do with soccer.

Beckham’s Act would ban the use of gas chambers to euthanize shelter animals in the state. Beckham is a dog that survived a gas chamber in Cullman County. He was placed in the chamber with a number of other dogs, lived through the horrible process and now lives with a family in Maine.
